We Teach Wellness for Life
Adolescence is a time when rapid physical, intellectual, emotional and physiological changes take place and lifestyle choices are firmly established. To help students navigate this critical stage in their development, make healthy choices and increase their understanding of themselves, we have made Wellness a top priority at Geffen Academy.
Our goal is to give students the tools and coping mechanisms to handle the mental and physical challenges that can arise over the course of a lifetime.
Our innovative curriculum, made unique through our partnership with UCLA, delivers Wellness lessons and opportunities in numerous ways:
- Students begin the school day at 9 a.m. to ensure they have ample time for sleep
- Geffen Academy faculty and staff will connect with students throughout the day and model healthy behaviors
- Students will learn about their minds and bodies, and develop systems to help them sustain their overall health through classroom activities and specially designed projects
will be facilitated by faculty to create student-led chalk talks, fishbowls, mentoring, and critical friends’ groups as well as incorporate lessons from community partners as a way to improve multicultural development, social emotional earning and community involvement.
will be integrated into each subject and grade level. Students might study world leaders who experienced medical/physical disorders in history class or explore music’s impact on the brain in music class.
will provide nutritious and balanced meals as well as nutrition education that will encourage students to make healthy food choices
gives Geffen Academy students access to resources and research that help inform our program. For example, the campus-based Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Research Center and Healthy Campus Initiative are each potential contributors of knowledge and insights to Geffen Academy Wellness lessons.
