Tuition Assistance Application Opens for 2019-20: October 1, 2018

2019-2020 Priority Application Deadlines:
Continuing students: December 21, 2018
Incoming Applicants: February 1, 2019

Tuition Assistance Guidelines

  • Tuition Assistance grants are awarded on the basis of family financial need.
    In the case of divorced or separated parents, both parents must submit financial information on the Smart Aid application. That can be done on one application or separate applications. Both parents must submit tax forms, W-2 or 1099 forms and paystubs to Smart Aid.
  • If one parent has no contact with the family, the custodial parent should submit third-party verification explaining the situation, (i.e. – court documents, or other individual with knowledge of the situation).
  • In evaluating the amount of aid needed to meet tuition costs, the Tuition Assistance Committee considers the family’s other children (ages, schools they attend), additional dependents, all sources of income, household expenses, assets and debts.
  • The Tuition Assistance application process occurs at the same time as application for admissions. However, the decisions to accept and to award assistance are separate.
  • Tuition Assistance renewal applicants are given priority (applicant must meet the priority application deadline).
  • Then, consideration is given to continuing students seeking aid for the first time who have met the priority application deadline.
  • Priority for Tuition Assistance to incoming students is given first to initial admits that meet the priority application deadline.
  • Renewal of Tuition Assistance is based on continued financial need, and new forms and tax returns must be submitted each year. All Tuition Assistance awards are contingent upon payment in full of the prior year’s account.

How to Prepare to apply for Tuition Assistance

Geffen Academy uses a third-party service, Smart Aid, to collect and analyze family financial information. In calculating need, Smart Aid uses a combination of family income and size, expenses, and assets in establishing an estimated household contribution toward educational expenses. Here are the steps for applying:

  • Create an account on Smart Aid (https://www.smartaidforparents.com/#/login) and complete the application.
    • Documents that will help you complete the application:
      • Tax returns with all schedules (for the 2019-20 award year the 2017 tax documents can be used)
      • Current income information
      • Documentation of various household expenses
  • After completing the application, you will need to upload the following documents to the SmartAid website:
    • Tax return (for the 2019-20 award year the 2017 tax return is required) with all schedules (this includes if you have either an S-Corp or Partnership listed on Schedule E or your 1040, please submit the corresponding K-1’s and form 1065 or 1120S)
    • All W-2 and/or 1099 forms (2017 form are required for the 2019-20 year)
    • Most recent paystubs (if applicable)
